UC Riverside 85, UC Davis 81 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team saw an 18-point second-half lead evaporate over a 12-minute stretch, but the Highlanders used a career-high 23 points from Kevin Bradshaw to pull out the 85-81 win over visiting UC Davis. The win moves the Highlanders into a seventh place tie with UC Irvine pending the outcome of their Saturday night home game vs. Pacific.
UCR dominated the first half of play nailing 59.4 percent of their shots in the initial 20 minutes of play en route to a 14-point halftime lead, 44-30. Bradshaw scored 13 points in the period to pace all scorers and Daymond Cowlah scored nine in nine minutes off of the bench.
The Highlanders scored the first four points of the second half and the rout appeared to be on, but Eddie Miller had other ideas. The junior guard scored seven of the Aggies next 11 points as they cut the UC Riverside advantage to 11.
Lay ups by Bradshaw and Kareem Nitoto pushed the lead back out to 14, but UC Davis went on a 13-2 run capped by a Miller three to make it a three-point game, 60-57, with 9:31 remaining. Just over two minutes later, a Mark Payne shot form long distance tied the game at 64.
Miller's pair of free throws with 5:25 on the clock tied the game again at 67, and his jumper with 4:43 left gave the Aggies their first lead of the second half at 69-67. A Miller three-pointer with 2:19 to go pushed the UCD advantage to three, but Bradshaw's dunk and a lay up by Nitoto put the Highlanders back up one, 77-76 with just over a minute to play.
Phil Martin and Miller traded layups, and Nitoto and Martin both hit a pair of free throws down the stretch, but another Miller three, his fifth of the game made it 83-81 UC Riverside with 1.3 seconds to play. On the ensuing inbounds play, BJ Sheary broke free from the pack, catching a Nitoto pass in stride and flushing a dunk as the horn sounded.
Miller scored 26 of his game-high 35 points in the second period. Martin (21 points), Nitoto (12) and Shearry (10) all joined Bradshaw in double figures for the Highlanders whose 85 points were the most they have scored since a 94-48 win over La Sierra on January 11.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Wednesday, March 2 meeting with Long Beach State, part of a double header with the women's team. The women tip off at 4:30 pm PT and the men get started at 8 pm.
