Kayde Hensley's 35-Yarder In 2 OT Gives Women's Soccer 2-1 Win
8/28/2011 3:13:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Riverside—After giving up a late goal at the end of regulation to tie the match and send it into overtime, the Highlanders regrouped in the bonus periods and Kayde Hensley's 35-yard score with 6:49 remaining in the match gave UC Riverside a 2-1 win to close out the UCR Women's Soccer Invitational. (Box Score)
It also gave the Highlanders their first winning streak since midway through the 2009 campaign as well as bragging rights of the invitational by virtue of their two wins and four goal scoring differential.
Kristy Adcock and Lindsey Ahmed connected on the first score of the afternoon for UC Riverside as Adcock rocketed a pass from deep in the Highlanders defensive end past midfield, which Ahmed corralled and deposited in the back of the net for a 1-0 UCR lead.
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the second half, and with 2:33 remaining in regulation, the Spartans finally converted. A scrum developed in front of the UCR goal and Gabrielle Stange came out of it with the ball slotting a shot past Jessica Olafsen for the tying score.
The Highlanders had a golden opportunity to score in the first overtime, as Kayde Hensley streaked down the left sideline unabated, but her cross was slightly off the mark and the score remained tied at one apiece.
In the second overtime, Hensley found herself all alone, 35 yards away from the goal. The Spartans keeper, Meghan Maiwald, had edged away from the goal, and Hensley took advantage arching her shot over Maiwald's outstretched arms.
Hensley, Adcock, Aaren Casimiro and Deborah Musa were named to the All-Invitational Team. They were joined by UC Irvine's Natalia Ledezma, Judy Christopher and CoCo Goodson; San Jose State's Catherine Ruder and Lauren Sanchez; and Mississippi State's Morganna Grimes and Shannen Jainudeen.
Next up for the Highlanders is a September 2 meeting with Michigan, at the UCR Soccer Stadium. Kick off is slated for 7 pm PT.
