Women's Soccer Hosts Michigan, Southern Utah This Weekend
8/30/2011 4:41:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (2-1-1) is above .500 for the first time since midway through the 2009 campaign and is looking to extend its winning streak this weekend with home matches against Michigan on Friday, September 2 and vs. Southern Utah on Sunday, September 4. Fans who are unable to attend the matches may follow all four matches on their computers and mobile devices via LiveStats.
The Highlanders have also scored six goals in four matches this season, already doubling their team total from a year ago. Kayde Hensley's two scores are as many as last year's leading scorer, Melissa Escamilla, recorded all season, and already five different UCR players have dented the back of the net.
Michigan comes into Friday riding a three-match winning streak after upending Oakland, Duquesne and DePaul by a combined 12 goals to two. They opened the 2011 campaign losing a 1-0 decision to Akron. One year ago they advanced to their 10th NCAA Tournament in the past 14 years.
Southern Utah dropped its first match of the season in a 2-0 decision to Idaho State, but bounced back with wins over Northern Arizona and Northern Iowa before tying Drake at the NAU Tournament last weekend.
UCR and Michigan have never faced off against one another, but the Highlanders and Thunderbirds have tangled on five previous occasions with UCR owning a 5-0-0 record in the series.
