Riverside, CA—Amanda Vialpando recorded game highs with 19 kills and and a career-high 20 digs for the UC Riverside volleyball team, but it was not enough as San Diego State came away with a 3-1 non-conference victory on Sunday afternoon at the Student Recreation Center.
The first two sets were very tight as the Aztecs (7-4) won the first set 28-26. The Highlanders (3-12) rallied back for a second set win 27-25, but SDSU put the match away with 25-18 and 25-16 victories in the third and fourth sets respectively.
San Diego State opened a 10-4 lead early in set one and led 21-17 late in the set. The Highlanders then scored five straight points off two SDSU errors and kills by Vialpando, Shelby LeDuff, and Monique Holt to take their first lead of the set, 22-21.
The teams traded points until 26-26 when consecutive kills by the Raegan Shelton and Johnna Fouch lifted the Aztecs to a 28-26 win.
The second set was even more of a back-and-forth battle with 12 tie scores and 5 lead changes. San Diego State maintained an early lead of between one and four points, and went up at set-point 24-23.
After a UCR timeout, kills by Bianca Endersby and Megan Reza gave the Highlanders a 25-24 set-point lead. Paije Pearson's kill on the next play tied the set at 25, but consecutive kills by Vialpando closed out the set 27-25 and tied the match at one.
San Diego State led wire-to-wire in the third set and pulled away as they opened a 21-13 lead en route to a 25-18 victory.
UCR needed to win the fourth set to force a fifth and final set. The Aztecs opened with a 5-1 lead, but the Highlanders closed to within two, 15-13, capped off by a LeDuff kill.
However, SDSU went on a 9-2 run including scoring five straight to take a 24-15 set-point advantage. A service error ended the run, but Shelton's kill on the next play closed out the match as San Diego State won 25-16.
Vialpando led all players with her 19-kill, 20-dig performance. LeDuff and Endersby added 12 kills apiece for the Highlanders while Jessica Moncayo added 13 digs and LeDuff and Katie Meyers recorded 10 each.
Four San Diego State players recorded double-digit kills led by Emily Harris' 15.
The Highlanders continue their four-match homestand with two Big West Conference matches against Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State on September 30 and October 1 respectively at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
