GAME NOTES
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UC Riverside junior Amanda Vialpando was named the Big West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week on September 19 after leading the Highlanders to a 2-1 weekend at the Hilton Stockton Invitational. Vialpando is the first Highlanders player to earn this distinction since Angie Mitchell picked up the weekly award on October 8, 2007.
BACK-TO-BACK
The Highlanders defeated Loyola Marymount and CSU Bakersfield in back-to-back matches on September 16, marking the first time UCR recorded consecutive wins since November 6 and 7, 2009. It was also the first time UC Riverside swept consecutive matches since August 30, 2008.
LION TAMERS
UCR swept Loyola Marymount 3-0 on September 16—the first win over the Lions in UCR's Division I history.
WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER
UC Riverside has won three matches so far in 2011 which is the fastest it has reached that total since the 2008 season. It is also one more win than the 2010 team recorded in the entire season.
KILLER INSTINCTS
UCR's Amanda Vialpando is averaging 3.83 kills per set. If she keeps that up, it would be the highest kills per set average for a member of the Highlanders since Jamie DeKiewiet averaged 4.93 in 2005. Vialpando is also ranked 66th in the country in that category.
BREAKING RECORDS
The UC Riverside volleyball team opened Big West Conference play on September 24 in front of a record crowd of 745 fans at the Student Recreation Center. The attendance shatters the previous UCR volleyball home attendance record of 625 set on October 27, 2001.
STREAK REMOVER
The Highlanders 3-2 victory over Fairfield on August 27 stopped an 18-match skid which began on October 5 of last season.
FIVE-SET THRILLERS
Over the past three seasons, UCR has a 6-3 record in matches that have gone five sets. In fact, in the Highlanders last nine wins, six of them have been of the five-set variety.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
The Highlanders 2011 schedule features seven matches against 2010 NCAA Tournament participants. In the latest AVCA Division I Poll, two of UCR's upcoming opponents are receiving votes in the poll (Long Beach State and UC Davis). The Highlanders already squared off against two ranked opponents when they tangled with then #3 Cal on August 26 and then #20 San Diego on September 3.
