Box Score—Pacific 3, UC Riverside 2
Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team won the first two sets against Pacific Friday evening in Big West Conference action, but could not stop a rally as the Tigers won the final three sets to complete the 3-2 win.
UC Riverside (5-18, 0-10) hit .326 in the first set en route to a 25-21 win, and even though they hit .175 in set two, were able to rally back for a 25-21 win to go up 2-0 in the match. The Tigers (17-6, 5-5) then took set three 25-23, and won easily in the fourth, 25-14, before winning 15-11 in the final frame.
Ashley Cox led all players with a career-high 27 kills, while Amanda Vialpando added 13 and Megan Reza had 12. Cox, Vialpando and Jessica Moncayo all had 17 digs, while Tyler Dorsey added six blocks for the Highlanders.
Pacific had the early 2-1 lead in set one, but UCR scored two straight to take a 3-2 lead, and it was a lead they never relinquished the remainder of the set.
The Highlanders went on a 4-0 run turning a 7-5 advantage into an 11-5 margin, prompting a Pacific timeout. The Tigers came out of the break and eventually closed the gap to three, 13-10.
The teams traded points until UCR again led by five points on five occasions late in the frame, the last at 24-19. Consecutive points by the Tigers made it 24-21, but a Pacific attack error sealed the 25-21 win for the Highlanders.
Neither team led by more than three points in the second set until midway through, when UCR turned a 13-12 lead into an 18-13 advantage. The Tigers rallied at that point, outscoring the Highlanders 8-1 to go up 21-19.
UC Riverside responded with a run of its own, scoring six unanswered while holding Pacific without a point the rest of the way to earn the come-from-behind 25-21 win.
The Tigers came out of the gate with a 7-1 lead in set three, but the Highlanders rallied outscoring Pacific 9-3, led by four Cox kills, to close to 12-10.
The teams went back and forth with the lead oscillating between two and five points until the Tigers led at set-point, 24-20. UCR made one last attempt, capitalizing on three straight Tigers errors to close to 24-23, but a Kat Schultz kill lifted Pacific to a 25-23 win.
It was all Pacific in the fourth set, opening a 6-1 lead and pushing it out to 14-6 before winning 25-14 to force a fifth and final set.
In the final frame, the teams traded points through 5-5 until the Tigers scored six straight to take an 11-5 lead. Consecutive kills from Vialpando forced a Pacific timeout, and UCR came out of the break scoring two more to force another Tigers timeout.
Gabby Cowden and Vialpando traded kills as the lead was still two, 12-10, but consecutive errors by the Highlanders made it 14-10. A Tigers service error made it 14-11, but a Hannah Clancy kill proved to be the winning point as the Tigers concluded their 3-2 comeback.
The Highlanders now get ready for a 7 pm meeting with UC Davis on Saturday, October 27 at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
