UC Riverside Baseball Drops 3-2 Pitchers Duel To #8 Cal State Fullerton

Fullerton, CA—UC Riverside's Eddie Orozco and Cal State Fullerton's Dylan Floro engaged in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel Friday evening at Goodwin Field, but it was the the eighth-ranked Titans who came out on top as they held on for a 3-2 victory. (Listen To Audio HIghlights)
Floro (9-3) allowed just three hits over the first four innings, but they all came in the top of the first as Vince Gonzalez, Clayton Prestridge and David Andriese reached on back-to-back-to-back singles. Andriese's single to center scored Gonzalez to put the Highlanders (19-28, 7-12) up 1-0.
Meanwhile Orozco (5-6) allowed just two hits over the first three innings, but in the Titans (33-16, 15-4) half of the fourth, Fullerton tied the game without the benefit of a base hit. Michael Lorenzen and Anthony Hutting drew consecutive walks to open the frame, and after Matt Chapman sacrificed the duo up 90 feet, Clay Williams grounded out to second ting the game.
Cal State Fullerton took the lead one inning later thanks in part to a throwing error by Andriese in right field. Whom Deacon and Richy Pedroza banged out back-to-back singles to start the inning, and Deacon came home on Andriese's errant throw on Pedroza's base knock.
Pedroza moved up to third on the play and scored one batter later as Greg Valazquez grounded out to short to make it 3-1 Titans.
Floro didn't allow a base runner over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but he ran into trouble in the top of the ninth. Eddie Young doubled down the left field line with nobody out, and pinch hitter Phil Holinsworth beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners.
The Titans brought Lorenzen to the mound to try and end the threat, and he got Gonzalez to ground into a double play which scored Young, but brought Fullerton to within one out of closing out the game. Prestridge drew a four-pitch walk to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the form of Andriese, but his fly to deep center as caught, and the game was over.
The Highlanders and Titans play game two of their three-game series on Saturday, May 20. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT.
