Fullerton, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team notched its second win of the season against a top-25 team Saturday evening as the Highlanders upset eighth-ranked Cal State Fullerton, 6-3. (Listen To Audio Highlights)
UCR (20-28, 8-12) jumped on Titans starter Kenny Mathews in the top of the first as Eddie Young singled to center, and Phil Holinsworth ripped a home run over the left field fence to put UC Riverside up 2-0.
Mathews issued a lead off walk in the top of the second to Cody Hough which ended his night. Dimitri DeLafuente took over and got out of the inning unscathed, but in the top of the third he issued a lead-off walk to Holinsworth and an RBI double to Vince Gonzalez putting the Highlanders up 3-0.
A walk to Clayton Prestridge brought another call to the bullpen as Willie Kuhl took to the mound. After striking out David Andriese and Kevin Davidson, he gave up an RBI single to left to Nick Vilter giving the Highlanders a four-run cushion.
UCR starter Trevor Frank (2-7) ran into trouble in the bottom of the third issuing a lead-of walk to Richy Pedroza, and allowing a bunt single to Ivory Thomas. Frank's error on the play allowed Pedroza to advance to third, and Carlos Lopez lifted a sac fly to center for the Titans first run of the game.
Frank retired the side in order in the bottom of the fourth, but in the fifth, he gave up back-to-back doubles to open the frame making it a 4-2 ballgame. After a Thomas ground out moved Pedroza to third, Lopez's second sacrifice fly of the night cut the Highlanders lead to one.
Kuhl, meanwhile, kept UC Riverside in check over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings striking out seven in his four innings of work while allowing just one hit.
By the time the eighth inning rolled around, Koby Gauna was on the hill for the Titans. He issued a lead-off walk to Bart Steponovich and gave up Holinsworth's second homer of the game as the Highlanders doubled up their lead, 6-3.
Frank's day ended in the top of the eighth with Ben Doucette taking over and recording the final five outs of the game to secure the win.
The rubber match of the three-game series is set for Sunday, March 20. First pitch is 6 pm PT.
