UCR Volleyball Loses Five-Set Battle To Cal State Northridge, 3-2

Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team battled through a tough five-set match Saturday evening against Cal State Northridge, losing 3-2 at the SRC Arena in the team's second Big West Conference match of the season.
The Matadors (11-4, 2-1) won the first set 26-24, but the Highlanders (5-10, 0-2) rallied to win sets two and three 25-20 and 29-27. CSUN came from behind for the fourth set win, 26-24, and held on in the fifth set for the 15-10 victory.
UCR's Ashley Cox led all players with 21 kills while Amanda Vialpando added 16, Annishia McKoy had 12, and Jasmin White added 10. Emily Borges had 25 digs to lead both teams, while Megan Patterson had 17 and Vialpando added 12.
The Matadors had the early lead in the first set, and turned a 10-8 advantage into an 18-12 margin. UC Riverside battled back to score nine of the next 11 points, capitaling on four CSUN errors and using five kills to go up by the score of 21-20.
The teams traded points until the Highlanders led at set-point, 24-22, but Cal State Northridge answered with four consecutive points to earn the come-from-behind 26-24 victory.
The teams had four tie scores and two lead changes to open the second set. UCR then rallied from a 6-5 deficit to go up 9-6, and continued to press opening up a 17-10 advantage.
The Matadors closed to three points on three occasions late in the frame, the last at 21-18. But the Highlanders pushed their margin out to five, 23-18, before holding on for the 25-20 win to tie the match at 1-1.
UC Riverside took the 2-1 lead in the match with a 29-27 third-set victory. The set saw 15 tie scores and five lead changes, including six tie scores from 22-22 to 27-27.
It was UCR in the early going with a 3-1 lead, but the Matadors went on a 5-1 run to take a 6-4 lead. CSUN then opened up a four-point lead, 14-10, but the Highlanders scored three straight and eventually went on to tie the set at 18.
The teams traded points with Cal State Northridge going up at set-point, 24-23, but an Ashley Cox kill tied it at 24. The Matadors led at set-point on two more occasions, the last at 27-26, but each time, UC Riverside rallied to tie the set.
The Highlanders then used kills from Megan Reza and Amanda Vialpando to go up 28-27, and after a CSUN timeout, an error by the visitors gave UC Riverside the 29-27 victory.
In the fourth set, UC Riverside turned a 5-5 tie into a 10-5 advantage capitalizing on three kills and two Matadors errors. UCR pushed its margin out to 15-7, but Cal State Northridge scored five straight to cut the lead to 15-12.
The Highlanders lead stayed between three and four points until 23-18, when the Matadors rallied to go up 24-23 after scoring six straight points. An Emily Borges kill stopped the run, but a CSUN kill made it 25-24, and an UCR error gave Cal State Northridge the 26-24 win to push the match into five sets.
In the final frame, UCR went up 3-1 before the Matadors tied the set at four. CSUN then went up by three at three more points throughout the set, en route to a 15-10 victory.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Norcal roadtrip at UC Davis and Pacific on September 28 and 29 respectively.
