UC Riverside Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Overtime Decision To UC Irvine

Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team gave UC Irvine all it could handle Sunday evening, but it was Jackie Samis scoring on a header in the first overtime that helped the Anteaters escape with a 2-1 victory. (Box Score)

The 'Eaters (6-7-0, 2-0-0) got on the board first capitalizing on a UC Riverside (5-6-2, 0-2-0) foul in the UC Irvine defensive 18 with 9:47 gone in the first. Rachel Wood converted on the subsequent penalty kick to put Irvine up 1-0.

The lead didn't last long, however, as Andrea Luttio's free kick in the 14th minute bounced off the cross bar and across the goal line tying the score at one.

It looked as if that score might hold up, but with 2:38 remaining in the first overtime period, Samis got a head on Madison Solow's corner kick and the ball squeaked past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Jessica White.

The Highlanders head out on the road this weekend, traveling to Hawai'i for a 10 pm PT kick off on Thursday, October 5 and to Cal State Northridge for a 5 pm start on Sunday, October 7.
