Box Score - Cal 3, UC Riverside 0
Berkeley, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team dropped a 3-0 contest to California Saturday morning in game two of the Molten Classic Presented by Hilton Garden Inn at Haas Pavilion. The Highlanders (3-5) hung tough in two of the three sets against the Golden Bears (4-3) before falling 25-19, 25-15, and 25-19.
The beginning of the first set was all Highlanders as a Bianca Endersby kill jump-started a 5-0 run to put UCR on top, 5-0. UCR pushed its lead out to 8-2 before a Cal rally tied the set at eight. The Golden Bears went up by as much as four before it was the Highlanders turn for a run, as they scored five of the next six points to tie the set at 14-14.
A few points later Cal went up by three, 18-15, until UCR again rallied to tied the set at 19. Those were the last points the HIghlanders would score, however, as three Bears kills combined with three UCR errors gave California the 25-19 win.
The second set was the opposite of the first, as Cal came out of the gate strong opening an 8-1 lead. UC Riverside got within five on two occasions, but could never pull closer as the Golden Bears cruised to a 25-15 victory.
In the third set, the Highlanders turned a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 advantage thanks to kills from Shelby LeDuff and Amanda Vialpando, and a service ace from Emily Borges. UCR then went up by three before Cal tied the set at 7-7, and both teams traded points as there were seven more tie scores through 14-14.
California scored three consecutive at that point, and still led by three, 21-18, before closing out the frame on a 4-1 run to win 25-19.
LeDuff led the Highlanders with nine kills while Megan Patterson recorded a match-high 12 digs.
UC Riverside concludes the tournament with a 5 pm PT match against Penn later on Saturday.
