Fullerton, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team overcame 16 first-half turnovers and a 14-point deficit Saturday evening to lead by as many as six in the second half, but Kwame Vaughn's tear drop jumper as time expired gave Cal State Fullerton the 71-69 win (Box Score).
The Titans (10-6, 3-1) entered the weekend as the second highest scoring team in the nation averaging 84.8 points per game overall and 93.0 in conference play. But the Highlanders controlled the pace of the game from the get go, and held Fullerton to 42.6 percent shooting from the field on the night.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders (4-12, 1-3) were connecting at a frenetic 62.2 percent clip from the floor, but 16 first-half miscues helped the Titans build a 14-point lead. UC Riverside regrouped and ran off nine straight points midway through the period, and Cal State Fullerton led by just six at the break, 34-28.
The Highlanders offense scored on its first five possessions of the second period to tie the game at 41 with 16:22 to go. After the Titans pushed their lead back out to five at 47-42, UCR scored seven of the next eight to take their first lead of the game, 49-48, with just over 13 minutes to play.
A pair of Taylor Johns' free throws following the 12-minute media timeout put UCR up two, 53-51, and after a Titans' turnover, Johns connected on two more from the charity stripe to put the Highlanders up four with 11:04 remaining.
Fullerton misfired on a three-pointer its next trip down the floor, and Johns tip-in with 10:24 on the clock gave UC Riverside its largest lead of the night with a six-point advantage.
The Titans battled back with five straight points to slice the Highlanders lead to one, and Coach Wooldridge called timeout with 8:13 on the clock.
Josh Fox made one of two free throws with 7:32 remaining, but on the Titans' next trip down the floor, Brown put them back on top with his first three-pointer of the night.
The Highlanders never led the rest of the way, but Chris Patton's lay up with 16 seconds to go tied the game, setting up the final play for Fullerton. Brown released his jumper from 10 feet out as the clock was winding down, and the buzzer sounded as the ball trickled through the net.
UC Riverside had four players scoring in double figures led by Fox's career-high 19. Patton added 16 and Chris Harriel chipped in with 13. Sammy Yeager paced the Titans with 19 points while D.J. Seeley added 18.
UCR's field goal percentage on the night (62.2%) is the eighth best percentage in the program's recorded history.
The Highlanders return home this week for a Thursday night meeting with Long Beach State at the SRC Arena, and a Saturday game against UC Irvine. Both games tip at 7 pm PT.
