Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team returns to the friendly confines of the SRC Arena this week following a three-game road trip, as they host conference foes Long Beach State on Thursday, January 17 and UC Irvine on Saturday, January 19. Both games tip at 7 pm PT.
The Highlanders are 1-3 in conference after dropping a hard-fought, 71-69, decision at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday (box score/recap). UC Riverside battled back from a 14-point first-half deficit to take a six-point lead midway through the second, but Kwame Vaughn's 10-foot jumper fell through the net as the buzzer sounded to give the Titans the win.
Freshman Josh Fox led UCR with 19 points on the night, and the Highlanders now boast three double-digit scorers on the season: junior Chris Patton (11.0), junior Chris Harriel (10.4) and Fox (10.1).
The Beach enters the week sitting alone atop the Big West Conference Standings following a three-game winning streak which included a 77-70 road win at UC Santa Barbara, and a four-point home win over Hawai'i that dropped the Rainbow Warriors out of first place.
Senior swing man James Ennis paces the 49ers in scoring averaging 16.6 points per game. Since the start of conference play, Long Beach State has increased its scoring average to 67.9 points per game thanks to a 74.2 points per game scoring clip against Big West opponents. Sophomore guard Mike Caffey (12.4 ppg) and junior forward Dan Jennings (10.1) also average in double figures for the Beach.
The Highlanders are 10-28 in the all-time series against Long Beach State. UCR won four of five games against the 49ers from 2008 to 2010, but the Beach has since run off six straight including a 24-point victory in their most recent meeting on February 25, 2012 (box score/recap).
