Riverside—If Michelle Patton can move UC Riverside’s volleyball program into the upper echelon of the Big West as its new coach … well, it might not be the most impressive thing she’s ever done. But it would be right up there.
Patton, whose hiring as Ron Larsen’s replacement was announced Friday, comes from San Francisco State. Arriving there in 2008, she took a dormant program and not only got it back up and running, but in five seasons got it to the NCAA Division II tournament twice. This past season the Gators tied for second in the CCAA at 16-6, a school record for conference wins, and finished 21-9 overall.
