Men's Basketball Nearly Comes Back From 15-Point Deficit Before Falling At Pacific
1/24/2013 10:05:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Stockton, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team nearly came back from a 15-point deficit Thursday evening at Pacific, pulling to within one with 3:27 to go, but the Tigers held on for the 63-58 victory (Box Score).
Pacific (11-8, 5-2) led by as many as 10 in the first half, and with 12:32 remaining in the second had their biggest lead of the game at 15, 48-33.
That's when the Highlanders (5-14, 2-5) made their move. Tre Owens drained a three to cut the lead to 12, and after a Pacific free throw, Chris Patton's old fashioned three-point play made it 49-39.
Markus Duran hit a three to push the lead to 13, but UCR ran off the next 10 points. Patton scored six during the run, while Johns added a pair of free throws, and Josh Fox scored on a put back to make it 52-49 with 5:39 remaining.
Two minutes later, a Johns layup cut the lead to one at 57-56, and it was a two-point game at 60-58 with 1:29 on the clock.
The Highlanders forced a turnover on the next Tigers possession, and had the ball with the chance to tie or take the lead with under a minute to play. Josh Fox missed a jumper, but grabbed his own rebound, and UC Riverside called its last time out.
With 10 seconds to go, Fox tried to feed Johns in the paint, but Johns fumbled the ball out of bounds as he rose towards the basket, effectively ending the game.
Patton scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the second half, and Johns added 12. McCloud matched Patton with 17 points as the lone double-digit scorer for the Tigers.
The Highlanders caught the turnover bug early in the game as they were flagged for four miscues before the first media time out. They only committed three turnovers in the entire first half Saturday in their win vs. UC Irvine.
While UC Riverside was struggling to get its offense in gear, the Tigers were nearly automatic from the floor making seven of their first 10 shots to build a lead of 17-8 with 8:11 off the clock.
Following the second media time out, UCR picked up the defensive intensity forcing Pacific into seven straight missed shots. On the offensive end of the floor, the Highlanders found their stroke, and cut the Tigers lead to 19-17 with 7:34 remaining.
After closing to within two, however, UC Riverside missed seven shots and committed two turnovers. Taylor Johns ended the drought with a fastbreak dunk to cut the lead to 26-20, but the Tigers entered the locker room at half time with a 31-24 advantage.
The turnover bug came back in the second half for UC Riverside as over the first nine minutes of play they made four of seven shots from the floor but coughed up the ball five times.
The Tigers were just five of 13 from the floor over that stretch, but three of those makes were from long distance, and they were a perfect four for four from the free throw line as they built a 48-33 lead with 10 and change remaining on the clock.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend busing to UC Davis for a Saturday meeting with the Aggies. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT.
