1/26/2013 9:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Davis, CA—Josh Fox poured in a career-high 22 points including 20 in the second half, but the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team fell at UC Davis Saturday evening, 79-72 (Box Score).
The Highlanders (5-15, 2-6) led 17-14 with 8:29 to go in the first half thanks in part to seven points from Chris Harriel and a defensive effort that held the Aggies (8-11, 4-4) to 40 percent shooting from the floor.
Tyler Les' three pointer tied the ballgame and ignited a 16-3 run that put UC Riverside down 10, 30-20, with 4:22 on the clock. Three of the Aggies' made baskets during the run were from long distance, and the final two came on a fastbreak dunk by Josh Ritchart.
Chris Patton's jumper stopped the run and one possession later Chris Harriel drained a three to make it an eight point Aggies lead. However, UC Davis would not miss a shot the rest of the period making 11 straight baskets to close out the first 20 minutes of play, taking a 41-30 lead into the locker room.
Harriel led all scorers at the break with 13 points, while J.T. Adenrele and Ryan Sypkens led the Aggies with 11 apiece. UC Davis' hot shooting to end the first half lifted its shooting percentage in the period to 62.5 percent including 63.6 percent from three-point range.
The Aggies cooled off somewhat in the second half making 50-percent of their shots from the floor, but UCD went 15 for 22 from the charity stripe over the final 20 minutes of play compared to three of four for UCR to help secure the victory. That offensive effort helped UC Davis build a 19-point lead with 9:06 to go in the game.
It was still a 17-point Aggies advantage at 70-53 with 4:45 remaining, when the Highlanders mounted their final push of the game. A 7-0 run cut the lead to 10, 70-60 with 3:12 on the clock, and Harriel's three pointer with 2:19 remaining made it a nine-point UCD lead. Josh Fox hit a three with 15 second to go to reduce the lead to eight, 78-70, and a pair of Tajai Johnson free throws with 4.3 on the clock cut it to seven, 79-72, but it was too little too late.
Harriel added 18 points for the Highlanders and Patton added 12 as UC Riverside topped the 50-percent shooting mark for the fourth time in five games.
Adenrele led five Aggies in double figure scoring with 20 points followed by Sypkens (17), Ritchart (13), Les (12) and Paolo Mancasola (10.)
The Highlanders return home this week to host Hawai'i on Thursday, January 31, and Cal State Northridge on Saturday, February 2. Thursday marks the third of five Bring Back The Past events that UC Riverisde's Men's Basketball program is hosting this season, and the Highlanders will honor the team's all-time leading scorer, Larry Cunningham, during halftime ceremonies.
