Men's Basketball Falls 76-61 At Hawai'i
1/5/2013 11:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Honolulu, HI—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team was looking to move a game above .500 in Big West play Saturday night, but the Highlanders ran into a one-man wrecking crew in the form of Brandon Jawato in the first half. The freshman guard scored all 21 of his game-high 21 points in the first 20 minutes of play thanks to a seven-of-seven shooting performance from three-point range as the Rainbow Warriors beat UCR, 76-61 (box score).
The score was tied at eight with 13:38 to go in the first when the game turned into the Jawato show. The freshman guard connected on four straight three-pointers as the Highlanders made just one of nine shots from the floor, and the Rainbow Warriors went up 20-10 with 8:55 to go.
Freshman forward Ozren Pavlovic then got into the act with a three-pointer with 7:27 on the clock to make it a 13-point Hawai'i lead. Isaac Fotu's bucket made it 25-10 Rainbow Warriors before Dayton Boddie's jumper ended the 14-0 UH run.
Jawato wasn't done, however, as he drained three more from long distance before the halftime whistle, and Hawai'i entered the locker room with a 40-21 lead.
Jawato didn't get his frst minutes of the second period until 6:30 to go as he was suffering from cramps. That didn't stop the Rainbow Warriors, however, as they pushed their lead out to 20, 44-24 on a Vander Joaquim's basket with two minutes gone in the second.
After a Josh Fox free throw, Tre Owens connected on a three-pointer that ended an 0 for 24 streak for the Highlanders from beyond the arc.
Hawai'i scored back-to-back baskets to go back up 20, but UCR countered with seven straight points to make a game of it at 48-35 with 12:57 remaining. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Highlanders would get.
Josh Fox led UC Riverside with 12 points on the night, while Dayton Boddie and Tre Owens added 10 apiece.
Joining Jawato in double digits for Hawai'i were Christian Standhardinger with 17; Joaquim with an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double; and Fotu with 10 points.
The Highlanders return to the main land this Saturday, January 12 for an 8 pm PT time tip at Cal State Fullerton.
