Santa Barbara, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team was trying to keep pace with Cal Poly in the race for the top spot in the Big West Conference, but it was UC Santa Barbara scoring in the fifth minute of overtime who came away with the 1-0 victory (Box Score).
The Mustangs (4-1) topped Cal State Fullerton 1-0 on Friday evening to move into sole possession of first place in conference, while the Highlanders (3-2) loss dropped them into a three-way tie with UCSB and UC Irvine.
Thw Highlanders and Gauchos played evenly in the first half with each team taking two shots on goal, but in the second, UC Santa Barbara turned up the intensity in the second with five shots on goal to none for UCR. But goalkeeper Elizabeth Silas was up to the task stopping all seven Gauchos shots during regulation.
UCSB kept up the pressure in overtime taking four shots in just four minutes and 15 seconds, and it was that final shot that sent the Gauchos faithful home happy as Allie Arinello rebounded her own shot and found McKinsey Martinez open from six yards out for her first score of the season.
The Highlanders remain on the road this Sunday as they travel to Cal Poly for a noon meeting with the front-running Mustangs.
