Riverside—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team battled through 26 tie scores and 12 lead changes in its three-set match to Cal Poly on Saturday evening, but it was the Mustangs earning the win in the tightly contested contest, 25-23, 26-24, and 25-17.
Bri Holmes and Tyler Dorsey both had 10 kills to lead the Highlanders (1-19, 0-8), while Annishia McKoy added eight and Cristina Maietta had seven. Megan McConnell led three Cal Poly (10-11, 4-4) players with a match-high 14 kills.
The first set witnessed eight tie scores and four lead changes as neither team led by more than three points.
UC Riverside seemed to take an advantage midway through, scoring three straight to go up 18-15. Even though Cal Poly cut the lead to one, the Highlanders led by two late in the frame at 23-21 following a Mustangs error.
However, a UCR service error on the next possession started a 4-0 Cal Poly run, as the Mustangs capitalized on two kills and an additional Highlanders error to come-from-behind and earn the 25-23 first-set victory.
The second set was much of the same with eight tie scores and three lead changes. The Mustangs had the early lead, though, turning a 4-4 tie into a 9-4 advantage. UCR rallied back to within two, 12-10, and went on to tie the set at 15 following a Holmes kill and a Mustang attack error.
The Highlanders then scored five of the next seven points to take a 20-17 advantage, capped off by consecutive Hillary Horton service aces, and a McKoy kill. That prompted a Cal Poly timeout, and the Mustangs came out of the break with a 5-2 run to tie the set at 22 apeice.
The teams then traded points with the Highlanders earning the set-point advantage, 24-23, after another McKoy kill. But Cal Poly used a kill of their own to tie the set at 24, and back-to-back kills from Taylor Gruenewald completed the second come-from-behind victory for the Mustangs, as they won 26-24.
The third set was again similar to the previous two, with 10 ties scores and five lead changes. UCR turned a 6-5 deficit into a 9-6 lead after a kill and service ace from Maietta, and consecutive kills from Dorsey. The Mustangs rallied back, though, tying the set at nine, and going on to take a 17-14 lead.
A Cal Poly service error stopped the rally, but the Mustangs closed out the set on an 8-2 run, earning the 25-17 win to secure the three-set victory.
UC Riverside now hits the road for a trio of matches beginning on Halloween night at UC Davis for a 7 pm PT contest.
