Seattle, WA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team erased an early 10-point deficit Monday evening, and led by two with less then six minutes to go, but Chris Patton's baseline jumper as time expired fell short, and Seattle escaped with a 69-68 victory (Box Score).
Neither team led by more than six points throughout the second half, as the lead changed hands six times. The last one came with 4:50 to go as Clarence Trent's dunk turned a 61-61 tie into a two-point Redhawks' lead.
The Highlanders turned the ball over on their next two possessions, while D'Vonne Pickett Jr. converted on Seattle's next two trips down the floor to push the Redhawks lead back out to six.
Steven Thornton ended the UC Riverside drought with a three-pointer with 2:38 to go slicing the lead in half. The teams traded layups on their next possessions, and Clarence Trent missed a three-pointer with 1:12 on the clock opening the door for the Highlanders.
Steven Jones drained a jumper in the lane with 1:01 remaining tto make it a one-point game, 69-68. Following a 30-second Redhawks timeout, Jones stole the ball from Isiah Umipig setting up the Highlanders for the last shot of the game.
UC Riverside Head Coach Dennis Cutts called a timeout with 24 seconds to go to set up the final play. Jones threw the ball cross court to Taylor Johns who fed Patton down on the baseline, but the Australian's shot was just off the mark and Seattle escaped with the win.
The Redhawks scored the first 10 points of the game on a pair of three-pointer and four free throws. Nick Gruninger finally got the Highlanders on the board with 17:18 on the clock thanks to a three-pointer from the top of the key. After two more Seattle free throws, Thornton converted on an old-fashioned three-point play. The Highlanders forced a Redhawks turnover on their following possession, and Gruninger's jumper cut the lead to four, 12-8.
A 5-0 Seattle run pushed the Redhawks' advantage back to eight, but the Highlanders scored the next 15 points to take their first lead of the game. Luiz Bidart's three-pointer with 9:19 remaining ended the UC Riverside run.
Seattle chipped away at the Highlanders' advantage over the next six minutes regaining the lead on an alley-oop dunk from Umipig to Deshun Sunderhaus with 3:50 to go. On UC Riverside's next possession, Johns was whistled for his third foul, and was forced to sit for the final three-plus minutes of the period.
The Redhawks closed the half on a 12-5 run, leading 40-36, thanks in part to a four-minute scoring drought by the Highlanders.
Trent led all scorers with 19 points while Umipig added 17 and Pickett chipped in with 10 for Seattle. Thornton's 18 points led UC Riverside, while Patton scored 15 and Finley added a career-high 14.
