Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team has two more games on its schedule before taking a nine-day break for final exams. The Highlanders host Loyola Marymount on Monday, December 2 at 7 pm PT, and La Verne on Thursday, December 5 at 7 pm.
UCR is coming off a 1-1 week which saw them beat Southern Utah, 74-59 (recap/box score/audio highlights) and drop a 69-68 decision to Seattle (box score/recap). The 15-point win over the Thunderbirds was the largest margin of victory over a non-conference road opponent since the Highlanders made the transition to Division I in 2001-02.
UC Riverside now boasts three double-figure scorers in Taylor Johns (14.8), Chris Patton (11.4) and Steven Thornton (11.2). Patton is pacing the squad in rebounds (7.2) and Thornton tops the team in three-point field goal percentage (.364).
Loyola Marymount is 5-2 on the year, but is coming off of a 1-2 trip to St. Thomas where they took part in the Ezybonds Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. They topped Marist, 76-70, but dropped decisions to Northern Iowa, 90-81, and Vanderbilt, 77-68. Anthony Ireland leads four Lions in double-digits at 19.3 points per game. LMU is connecting on 46.7 percent of its shots from the field, but just 28.1 percent from long distance.
The Highlanders are 4-2 all-time against the Lions (all-time results) having won three straight including a 59-52 win at LMU on December 15, 2008 (box score/recap).
La Verne won its first three games of the season before losing its most recent outing, 73-64 against Keystone at the Stevenson University Hoopsville National Invitational Classic. See Ron is the Leopards leading scorer averaging 15.0 points per game. Stephen Brett is also averaging double figures at 10.8 points per game, and he leads the team with a 65.0 field goal percentage and a 53.8 percent three-point field goal percentage.
UC Riverside is 20-14 against La Verne (all-time results), but 33 of those decisions came during the Highlanders' Division II era. The teams renewed their rivalry on November 19, 2009 with UCR winning 87-71 (box score/recap). That marked the 12th straight win in the series for UC Riverside.
