Riverside-- The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team used a 21-7 second half run to upend UC Santa Barbara, 54-45, Wednesday evening, snapping a seven-game losing streak in the process (Box Score).
The Highlanders (6-20, 3-11) trailed, 32-29 with 5:32 gone in the second when Chris Harriel got the run started with a lay up. Former Gaucho Lucas Devenny then hit a pair of free throws to give UC Riverside a one-point lead. Josh Fox made one of two from the charity stripe, and Harriel followed with a dunk and a fastbreak layup to make it a 9-0 Highlanders run, giving UCR a six-point lead with 8:35 to play.
After UC Santa Barbara (8-17, 4-10) ended the run on an Alan Williams jumper and a three pointer by Taran Brown, the Highlanders scored 12 of the next 14 points to put the game out of reach.
The Highlanders could have put the game out of reach sooner had it not been for the Gauchos efforts on the offensive glass in the first half coupled with UC Riverisde's miscues. The Highlanders committed 12 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play, while Santa Barbara grabbed 13 offensive boards. The Gauchos turned that into a 15-point advantage in shot attempts in the period, and despite the fact that UCR outshot UCSB 39 to 21 percent in the first half, the game was still tied at 20 at the break.
Harriel scored nine of his team-high 14 points in the second half, while Taylor Johns added 11 points and Chris Patton chipped in with 10.
UCSB's Williams lead all scorers with 15 points and added 12 rebounds. Brown joined Williams in double figures with 12 points.
The Highlanders are on the road this weekend, traveling up north to play Portland State on Saturday February 23rd as part of the Ramada Worldwide BracketBusters Tournament. Tip is slated for 1 pm PT.
