Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team hosts UC Davis and Pacific this week in the final two home games of the season for the Highlanders. Thursday's tip against the Aggies is scheduled for 8 pm PT, while Saturday's game begins at 5 pm and serves as the culmination of the weekend's homecoming festivities.
The Highlanders are coming off of a 66-58 loss at Portland State on Saturday in their Ramada BracketBuster match up (box score/recap). Chris Patton scored 22 points in the defeat, raising his team-leading scoring average to 13.0 per game. Chris Harriel is also averaging double figures in scoring at 10.4 points per game. The junior transfer led the Highlanders in scoring last Wednesday in the team's 54-45 win over UC Santa Barbara (box score/recap).
The Aggies are in sixth place in the conference, one game back of Cal Poly. They are coming off of a 79-78 win over Northern Colorado in their BracketBusters game, and have won two out of their past three league games as well.
Corey Hawkins is posting MVP-caliber numbers this season leading the Big West in scoring at 20.5 points per game, and in free throw percentage at 86.4 percent. He is also connecting on 40.2 percent of his three-pointers, averaging 5.7 rebounds per game, making 86.4 percent of his free throws and averaging 1.5 steals per game.
But UC Davis is more than just a one-man show. Ryan Sypkens is averaging 14.4 points per game thanks in part to a league-leading 48.4 percent effort from long distance. The Aggies as a whole are making 40.2 percent of their shots from beyond the arc—tops in the conference and sixth best in the nation.
J.T. Adenrele paces the conference in field goal percentage at 57.3 percent and averages 12.5 points per game. He is also fourth in the league in blocked shots with 37.
The last time UC Riverside and the Aggies met, Josh Fox scored a career-high 22 points, including 20 in the second half, but it was UC Davis coming away with the 79-72 victory (box score/recap). That win snapped a three-game Highlanders winning streak over the Aggies, and UCR now leads the all-time series, 29-27 (view all-time results).
