Baseball Holds On For 7-6 Win Over Sacramento State In Night Cap Of Saturday Double Header

Sacramento, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team picked up a split of its Saturday double header at Sacramento State with a 7-6 win in the night cap (Box Score). The Highlanders dropped the first game, 4-3 (Read about game one).
UC Riverside jumpe on top 1-0 in the top of the second courtesy of a wild pitch. Phil Holinsworth was hit by a pitch with one out in the second, and Alex Rubanowitz's single to right moved Holinsworth to third. After Nick Vilter struck out, Rubanowitz stole second, and a wild pitch brought Holinswirth home with the first run of the game.
A wild pitch figured into the Highlanders' third inning as well. UCR put Devyn Bolasky on third and Clayton Prestridge n first with two outs. David Andriese cleared the bases with a double to right field, and advanced to third on a throwing error by the second baseman.. Andriese scampered home on Ty Nichols second wild pitch of the afternoon putting the Highlanders up 4-0.
UC Riverside starter Ben Doucette (1-1) gave up just a single base hit through his first two innings of work, but in the third, Dane Fujinaka and Scotty Burcham each singled with nobody out. After Nathan Lukes reached on a fielder's choice that moved Fujineka to third, Chris Lewis grounded out to second to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
The next batter, Will Soto reached on a fielding error by Prestridge in left field scoring Lukes with the Hornets' second run of the day.
Nichols' day ended after the fourth inning, and he was replaced by Tyler Hoelzen to start the top of the fifth. He was still on the mound in the fifth, when the Highlanders put two more runs on the board.
Vilter ripped a one-out double to left center and Bart Steponovich walked to put runners on first and second. Francisco Tellez singled through the left side to load the bases, and that was the end of Hoelzen's day. Hunter Greenwood got the call out of the pen, and he walked Joe Chavez to force in a run. Bolasky followed with a liner to center which scored Steponovich from third to make it 6-2 UC Riverside.
The Hornets went to the bullpen again in the top of the seventh, and the Highlanders scored a single run in the inning thanks to an Andriese triple down the right field line and Holinsworth's ground out to second putting UC Riverside up 7-2.
As it turned out, UCR would need every one of those runs.
Doucette gave up a lead-off single to David Del Grande to start the bottom of the seventh, and Kyle Moses followed with a triple to left center to make it 7-3 Highlanders. One out later, Burcham grounded out to short scoring Moses and cutting the UC Riverside advantage to three.
Trevor Frank took over for Doucette to start the eighth, allowing a lead off walk to Lewis before enduing three consecutive fly ball outs off of the Hornets bats to send it into the ninth.
The Highlanders went in order in the top half, but Sacramento State mounted one final rally in the bottom half of the inning. Del Grande opened with an infield single. and Moses moved him to second with a single to center. Shawn Wheeler grounded into a double play moving Del Grande to third and pulling UC Riverside to within one out of the win.
A grounder to second by Beacham looked to be the final out of the day, but VIlter couldn't handle it, and Del Grande came home to make it a 7-5 game. Lukes followed with a single through the right side that Chavez couldn't handle in right putting runners on the corners.
Lewis then singled up the middle scoring Burcham and putting the tying run on second in the form of Lukes. Frank got Soto to fly out to center to end the game, though, and the Highlanders had their third win of the season in the books.
UC Riverside and Sacramento State play the final game of their four-game series on Sunday, February 24 with first pitch scheduled for 12 pm PT.
