Men's Basketball Goes Cold Midway Through Second Half In 66-58 Loss At Portland State
2/23/2013 2:59:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Portland, OR—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball team battled back from an 11-point deficit to take an eight-point lead midway through the second half Saturday afternoon, but the Highlanders offense went cold for a seven-minute stretch, and Portland State was able to escape with a 66-58 victory (Box Score).
The Highlanders trailed by seven at the break, 33-26, but opened the second stanza by scoring the first seven points to take their first lead of the game since early in the first period. Chris Patton scored six of his game-high 22 points in the run.
The teams traded buckets over the next few minutes, but with the game tied at 42 with 13:36 to go, UC Riverside scored eight in a row to take the team's largest lead of the day. Patton was once again the focal point scoring four points, while Taylor Johns and Davin Guinn each chipped in with two points.
That's when the Highlanders went cold, as the Vikings scored the next 16 points over a span of nearly seven minutes. During that time span, UC Riverside missed four shots, including two from three-point range; missed four free throws; and committed two turnovers. Fox's stick back with 4:27 remaining ended the run, but Gary Winston drained a jumper for Portland State to get the points right back.
Aaron Moore hit one of two free throws for the Vikings to give PSU a nine-point lead, but Fox scored on a put back dunk to cut it to seven. Michael Harvey hit one of two freebies on the Vikings next trip down the floor and a Patton jumper cut the lead to six with 1:22 to go.
The Vikings were unable to advance the ball past the time line on their next possession, as Steven Jones picked up a steal and a fastbreak lay up to make it a 62-58 ballgame.
That was as close as the Highlanders would get, however. Harvey missed a three-pointer on the next Vikings trip down the floor, and UC Riverside thought it had an over the back call on the subsequent rebound. The officiating crew called a jump ball instead, and the ball remained in Portland State's hands.
UCR had to foul, and Hartman drained both free throws to put the Vikings back up by six. Josh Fox's three-pointer with 15 seconds to go was off the mark, and Winston hit a pair of free throws for the final margin of victory, 66-58.
Fox posted a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Highlanders, while three members of the Vikings scored in double figures—Michael Harthun with 15, Moore with 13 and Winston with 10.
Portland State's offense played as advertised in the first half as they built a 33-26 halftime lead thanks to 50-percent shooting from the field and 44.4 percent from long distance. The Highlanders, meanwhile, struggled early making just 37.0-percent of their shots in the first 20 minutes of play.
Chris Harriel, who played his first two seasons of collegiate basketball at Portland State, paced UC Riverside in the first half with eight points, while the Vikings Aaron Moore led all scorers with nine.
The Highlanders head home for their final two home games of the season beginning with a Thursday, February 28 meeting with the Aggies of UC Davis. Tip is slate for 8 pm PT.
