Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team tries to keep its perfect home record in tact as the Highlanders host UNLV on Tuesday for a 3 pm first pitch at The Plex. UCR is 11-0 at home this season tying what is believed to be the program record for consecutive home wins set on two previous occasions back in 1995 and 2003. The team's last loss in the Inland Empire came on May 27, 2012 against Cal Poly.
The Highlanders swept Pacific over the weekend (Video Recaps: Friday/Saturday/Sunday) to move into a tie for second place in the Big West, two games behind front-running Cal State Fullerton.
Joe Chavez was named Big West Conference Player of the Week for his efforts last week. The sophomore hit .556 for the week with a .600 on base percentage and a .944 slugging percentage. He scored the game winning run in each of the Highlanders three victories over the weekend (Read The Press Release).
Donovan Gonzales (0-4, 6.46) will get the start for the Highlanders Tuesday. A reliever for most of his UC Riverside career, Gonzales was shifted into the starting rotation following injuries to the Highlanders pitching staff.
UNLV enters the week with a 23-12 record, but they have dropped four of their last five games including two of three over the weekend vs. Nevada Reno.
The Rebels home stadium is one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the nation, and they have the offensive slash line this season to back it up (.295/.373/.389). Five UNLV regulars are hitting better than .300 on the season led by Patrick Armstrong's .367. His .469 on base percentage also tops the squad, and Brandon Bayardi (.341/.425/.558) is the top slugger on the team with seven home runs.
Lefty Mark Shannon (3-1, 2.61) gets the start for the Rebels on Tuesday. In addition to picking up five mid-week starts on the year, Shannon is also the team's regular center fielder (.324/.380/.479) and leads the team with 15 extra base hits.
UC Riverside is 17-5 all-time against UNLV, and took three of four from the Rebels in a pair of two-game series a year ago (View All-Time Results).
The Highlanders resume Big West Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at UC Davis.
