Bankers Classic In Stockton, CA Up Next For UC Riverside Volleyball

Stockton, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team begins its third weekend of action this Friday and Saturday, September 13 and 14 at the Bankers Classic hosted by the University of Pacific. The Highlanders are set to face off against host and former Big West Conference member Pacific on Friday at 7 pm PT. On Saturday, UCR competes against San Jose State at 10 am followed by a 5 pm match against Winthrop.
The Tigers enter the weekend with a 4-4 record but have lost their last two matches. UC Riverside and Pacific competed regularly against one another since 2001 when the Highlanders moved to Division I (Pacific is now a member of the West Coast Conference). The Tigers own an all-time record of 23-1-1 against UCR.
San Jose State is 2-5 following a win over Eastern Washington on Wednesday. The Spartans are 3-1 all-time against the Highlanders following victories in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
Winthrop boasts the best record of the four teams in the Bankers Classic at 6-1. This will be the first meeting between the Eagles and UC Riverside in program history.

GAME NOTES
GENERAL PATTON
UC Riverside is in its first season under new head coach Michelle Patton. Patton comes to the Highlanders following five seasons at San Francisco State, where she took over a program that lay dormant for four years (2004-07). The Gators advanced to two NCAA Tournaments during Patton's tenure including a 21-9 mark in 2012 which included a program-record 16 conference victories.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
Ashley Cox was named to the Wildcat Invitational All-Tournament Team on August 31 after hitting .216 and averaging 3.82 kills per set in the Highlanders three matches against Seattle, Texas Tech and Weber State.
Maddie Hubbell was selected to the Sheraton Airport Lobo Classic All-Tournament Team on September 7 after recording a team-high 43 digs over the weekend for an average of 4.30. She also had eight assists in those matches including a career-best five against Idaho State.
FIVE-SET THRILLERS
UCR lost a five-set, 3-2 battle to Weber State on August 31. Last year, the blue and gold lost five matches of the five-set variety while winning two of them.
IN THE BEGINNING ...
The Highlanders started the 2012 season with a 3-1 record, tying the program's Division I-era record for best start through four matches. The 2005 UCR squad went on to start the year 11-1. So far is 2013, UC Riverside is 0-6.
KILLER ATTACK I
Outside Hitter Ashley Cox recorded a career-high 29 kills against UC Santa Barbara on November 16, 2012—the most kills a member of the Highlanders has posted since Jamie DeKiewiet had 30 against UC Irvine on November 12, 2005. The 29 kills tie for sixth all-time in UC Riverside's program history for most kills in a single-match.
SNUFFING THE ANTEATERS
UCR picked up its first league victory of the 2012 season on November 8, defeating UC Irvine 3-1. The win also snapped a 15-match losing skid in Big West play dating back to the end of the 2011 season.
WRONG WAY STREAK
The Highlanders dropped 12 straight matches to open Big West play last season—the most since the 2010 squad went without a win in conference play.
KILLER ATTACK II
The Highlanders hit .375 as a team against Providence on August 25, 2012—the second-best hitting percentage in a single match in the team's Division I history.

ALL-CONFERENCE
Two UC Riverside players garnered All-Big West Conference accolades in 2012 as outside hitters Amanda Vialpando and Ashley Cox were each selected to the Honorable Mention Team, while Cox was also selected to the All-Freshman Team.
