Colorado Springs, CO—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team embarks on its final non-conference weekend of play this Friday and Saturday, September 20-21 with a trio of matches against Wyoming, Utah Valley, and Air Force. The Highlanders will first face the Cowgirls on Friday morning at 9:00 am PT before a 2:00 pm contest against the Wolverines. On Saturday, UCR will play the host Falcons at 11:00 am.
The Highlanders are coming off of their first victory of the 2013 season last Saturday, topping Winthrop 3-1 to conclude action at the Bankers Classic (box score/recap).
Wyoming started the year with a perfect 6-0 record but has since lost four of the last five matches. Friday's meeting against the Cowgirls will be the first in UCR's program history.
Utah Valley is 3-8 entering this weekend having snapped a five-match losing streak with a sweep of Weber State on Tuesday. The Wolverines have won both previous meetings against the Highlanders, both 3-0 decisions in 2010.
The Air Force Academy brings a record of 2-8 into the weekend following a three-match losing skid. The Falcons have played two Big West opponents so far this year, losing 3-2 to UC Irvine on August 31, but defeating Long Beach State, 3-2 on September 6. UC Riverside is 5-0 all-time against the Academy but the teams have not played each other since 1993.

GAME NOTES
TAKING HOME THE W
The Highlanders earned their first victory of the 2013 season on September 14 with a 3-1 win over Winthrop to conclude the Bankers Classic. The win snapped an eight-match skid to open the season and a 10-match losing streak dating back to the end of last year.
ROAD DIVAS
UCR plays its first 13 games on the road in 2013, tying Big West member Cal Poly for most road matches to start the season among the leagues' schools.
GENERAL PATTON
UC Riverside is in its first season under new head coach Michelle Patton. Patton comes to the Highlanders following five seasons at San Francisco State, where she took over a program that lay dormant for four years (2004-07). The Gators advanced to two NCAA Tournaments during Patton's tenure including a 21-9 mark in 2012 which included a program-record 16 conference victories.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
Ashley Cox was named to the Wildcat Invitational All-Tournament Team on August 31 after hitting .216 and averaging 3.82 kills per set in the Highlanders three matches against Seattle, Texas Tech and Weber State.
Maddie Hubbell was selected to the Sheraton Airport Lobo Classic All-Tournament Team on September 7 after recording a team-high 43 digs over the weekend for an average of 4.30. She also had eight assists in those matches including a career-best five against Idaho State.
Cristina Maietta earned Bankers Classic All-Tournament Team honors on September 14 following matches against Pacific, San Jose State, and Winthrop. The freshman led the Highlanders with 3.80 kills per set over the weekend including a career-high 19 in UCR's 3-1 win over Winthrop. The outside hitter also averaged 1.90 digs per set, hit .165, and recorded three services aces throughout the three matches.
QUEEN OF DIGS
Freshman Maddie Hubbell leads the Highlanders and is second in the conference with 128 total digs and 4.13 digs per set. If she maintains this average, it will be the most digs per set for a member of the Highlanders since 1998 when Janna Stern averaged 4.55 d/s.
FIVE-SET THRILLERS
UCR lost a five-set, 3-2 battle to Weber State on August 31. Last year, the blue and gold lost five matches of the five-set variety while winning two of them.
IN THE BEGINNING ...
The Highlanders started the 2012 season with a 3-1 record, tying the program's Division I-era record for best start through four matches. The 2005 UCR squad went on to start the year 11-1. So far in 2013, UC Riverside is 1-8.
KILLER ATTACK I

The 29 kills tie for sixth all-time in UC Riverside's program history for most kills in a single-match.
KILLER ATTACK II
The Highlanders hit .375 as a team against Providence on August 25, 2012—the second-best hitting percentage in a single match in the team's Division I history.
