Colorado Springs, Colorado—Following a four-set loss to Wyoming earlier in the day, the UC Riverside Volleyball Team looked to rebound against Utah Valley, but the Wolverines earned the sweep, 25-23, 25-17 and 25-23 at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Bri Holmes recorded a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs to lead the Highlanders (1-10), while Tyler Dorsey added six kills and Cristina Maietta had five. Lauren Stringham led Utah Valley (4-8) with 10 kills.
UCR was on top early in the first set, 4-1, and still let by two, 8-6, following a UVU service error. The Wolverines chose that time to counter, scoring six of the next seven points to take a 12-9 lead. The Highlanders rebounded with three straight points to tie the set at 12, but another Utah Valley rally made it 16-12 in favor of the Wolverines.
Utah Valley still led by four, 19-15, late in the set when UCR went on a 4-1 run to cut the margin to 20-19. The teams traded points until the Wolverines led at set-point, 24-22. A service error by UVU then made it 24-23, but a service error by the Highlanders gave Utah Valley the 25-23 win.
UC Riverside's offense struggled in the second set as the Wolverines took a 7-0 lead early, and went on for the 25-17 victory.
The third set was more like the first as the teams were battling late in the frame. UCR fell behind 18-15, but scored four of the next five points to tie the set at 19. After a tie at 20, the Highlanders used two Holmes kills to go up 22-20, and still led moments later at 23-22.
It looked as if UC Riverside would send the match into four sets like earlier in the day against Wyoming, but the Wolverines countered with two kills and a UCR attack to come from behind for the 25-23 victory.
The Highlanders are back in action tomorrow playing Air Force at 11:00 am PT in Colorado Springs, CO.
