Riverside—UC Riverside Women's Soccer athlete Celina Valencia is in her junior season with the blue and gold, and we here at gohighlanders.com got to know her a little better this fall via our Highlander Highlights series.

... is a junior from Alhambra, CA
... plays outside midfielder and foward
... is proud of making it on the Big West Conference All-Academic Team
... majors in environmental sciences
... likes to eat apple pie over ice cream
... attended an all-girl high school
... enjoys making friendship bracelets
Celina is always optimistic; when others see the glass half-empty, she sees it as half-full.
Her favorite quote is "Somewhere behind the athlete you've become and the hours of practice and the coaches who have pushed you is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back... play for her." --Mia Hamm
Celina did not stop sucking her thumb until she was eight years old.
If she could witness any event, she would have wanted to be present when Brandi Chastain scored the winning penalty kick in the 1999 Women's World Cup Final against China.
Her worst injury was a third degree burn she got when she was three years old -- you can still see the scar on her right thumb and wrist.
