Box Score—Wyoming 3, UC Riverside 1
Colorado Springs, Colorado—Bri Holmes recorded a career-high 18 kills for the UC Riverside Volleyball Team (1-9) on Friday morning, but the Highlanders fell short in four sets to Wyoming, 25-23, 25-13, 21-25 and 25-15 at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Following Holmes' 18 kills, Fabiana Rosas added nine while Tyler Dorsey had six. Reese Plante led the Cowgirls (8-4) with 10 kills.
UCR rallied back from a 19-10 deficit in the first set by scoring nine of the next 11 points to cut the lead to just one, 21-20. The Highlanders used five kills, two service aces, and two Wyoming errors to put the pressure on the Cowgirls.
UC Riverside stayed within a point or two and staved off set-point by Wyoming at 24-22, capitalizing on a Dorsey block to make it 24-23. The Highlanders could not stop a kill by Mikaela Ryshytylo, however, as the Cowgirls closed out the set with a close 25-23 victory.
UCR came out of the gate strong in the second set and led 5-1, but Wyoming countered with a 9-0 run to go up 10-5. The Highlanders cut the lead to 13-10 following consecutive Cowgirls attack errors, but Wyoming closed out the frame outscoring UCR 12-3 for the 25-13 win.
The Highlanders looked to extend the match heading into the third set, and battled it out with 13 ties scores and seven lead changes. UCR was down one, 17-16 late in the set, but scored seven straight to go up 23-17. Holmes had one kill during the rally while Nae Bender added two, and UCR's defense was effective forcing four errors.
The Cowgirls stopped the run with back-to-back points, forcing a UC Riverside timeout. After the break, UCR led at set-point, 24-19, thanks to a Holmes kill, and earned the 25-21 victory with another Holmes attack to make it a 2-1 score in the match.
But in the fourth set, Wyoming led wire-to-wire after starting with a 6-0 lead. The Highlanders never got closer than four the rest of the way as the Cowgirls went on for the 25-15, four-set win.
UCR continues action Friday afternoon playing another neutral-site contest against Utah Valley at 2:00 pm PT in Colorado Springs.
