Vancouver, BC—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team opened its 2013 preseason international tour Thursday with a 88-77 victory over the University of British Columbia (Box Score - PDF).
Given the nature of the exhibition, the Highlanders took long looks at various combinations with 10 players logging at least 10 minutes on the night.
UC Riverside had most of its success offensively in the paint as senior center Chris Patton picked up where he left off a year ago connecting on 12 of 17 shots form the floor in 27 minutes. Junior guard Charles Standifer added 13 points while sophomore forward Taylor Johns chipped in with 12 and freshman Sam Finley scored 10.
It was all Highlanders in the first quarter as Patton and Taylor combined to go five for seven from the floor leading UC Riverside to a 20-13 lead. UCR held British Columbia to four of 12 shooting from the field, and the T'Birds were only able to keep it close by making five of six from the charity stripe.
UBC began to heat up in the second period, making eight of 16 shots and going 10 of 10 from the line. David Wagner led the way with 10 points, and Tommy Nixon added eight. The Highlanders continued their hot shooting, but were forced into seven turnovers in the frame as the Thunderbirds closed the gap and tied the score at 39 at the break.
The score was still tied at 50 wth 3:15 to go in the third quarter, but Nick Gruninger's lay up gave the Highlanders a lead they would never relinquish. It also began a 20-9 run as UC Riverside pushed its lead out to what was then a game-high 11 points, 70-59.
After the break, the Highlanders committed just three turnovers, and went 12 of 16 from the free throw line. They turned of the defensive intensity as well holding Wagner to six points and Nixon to five in the final 20 minutes
For the game, UCR made 35 of 66 shots from the field (53.0%) while holding the Thunderbirds to 23 of 60 (38.3%).
Game two of the highlanders' three-game international tour is scheduled for Friday, September 6 at Trinity Western University. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT, and fans can listen in live as The Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, brings the call to gohighlanders.com.
GAME NOTES
The game was played under slightly different rules from those to which the Highlanders accustomed: four, 10-minute quarters rather than two, 20-minute halves; A 30-second shot clock rather than a 35-second clock; a deeper three-point line; and an eight-second backcourt violation rather than 10 seconds.
This is the first time the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team has participated in a preseason international tour. The women's program went to Greece several years ago.
The University of British Columbia went 28-8 a year ago including 17-4 at home and 18-4 in conference. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIS nationals in Ottawa, Ontario.
The starting tip was delayed 15 minutes due to the Highlanders bus being late picking them up from the hotel.
