Sam Finley's 24 Points Lead Five Highlanders In Double Figures In 98-76 Win
9/6/2013 9:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Langley, BC—Freshman Sam Finley scored 24 points to lead five Highlanders in double figure scoring as UCR upended Trinity Western, 98-76, in game two of their three-game international tour (Box Score).
The Spartans scored five of the first seven points of the game, and led by one, 10-9, with 5:58 gone in the first quarter, but that's when the Highlanders subbed in Colin Gruber, Chris Patton, Nick Gruninger and Taylor Johns to join Finley.
UC Riverside scored the next nine points over a span of just over two minutes to go up by eight, and at the end of the first, it was UCR 28, TWU 18.
The Highlanders continued their run to open the second quarter scoring the first five points after the break. With 6:19 to go before the half, Sam Finley's old-fashioned three-point play made it a 20-point UC Riverside lead, and that's what the Highlanders took into the locker room.
Finley led all scorers with 16 at intermission, while the Spartans' Kelvin Smith led Trinity Western with 11.
UC Riverside led by as many as 26 early in the third quarter, but the Spartans began to close the gap as the period came to an end. TWU ended the third on a 6-0 run closing the Highlanders advantage to 14, 70-56.
Trinity Western scored the first two points of the fourth quarter to make it a 12-point game, but that's when the Highlanders got back down to business scoring 10 of the next 11 points to effectively end the game.
Patton added 16 points for the Highlanders while Charles Standifer scored 12, Lucas Devenny added 11 and Taylor Johns scored 10 as the UCR shot 64.9 percent from the floor.
UC Riverside takes the next two days off before traveling to Fraser Valley University for a 7 pm PT tip.
