Michael Salazar's Hat Trick Leads Men's Soccer To 5-1 Victory Over Pacific
8/29/2014 9:40:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team opened the 2014 season in record-breaking fashion Friday evening as Michael Salazar became the first member of the Highlanders to score three goals in a single match in a 5-1 victory over visiting Pacific.
Johnny Tovar got the Highlanders on the board first, though as Salazar found him on the right side of the Tigers box with just over 11 minutes gone in the period for a 1-0 UCR lead.
Salazar picked up his first career score for the Highlanders less than 10 minutes later, with an unassisted goal from just outside the Pacific box.
He added a second score in the 57th minute, and his record-setting third with just over 26 minutes to go in the match. Pacific's Tristan Blackmon netted the Tigers lone score of the evening on a stick back of his own missed shot which bounced off the left post.
Juan Mendoza Jr. ended the scoring with a penalty kick in the 73rd minute.
Salazar also set the program record for points in a match with seven.
The Highlanders are on the road next weekend as they travel to the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico where they will take on the host Lobos and American University.
