Second-Half Score Gives #6 New Mexico 2-1 Win Over Men's Soccer

Albuquerque, NM—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team squared off against the number six team in the nation Friday, and nearly came away with the win, but a second-half score helped the Lobos to a 2-1 victory over the Highlanders.
UC Riverside jumped on top in the sixth minute of play when Lobos keeper Patrick Poblete was whistled for a foul in the New Mexico box. Otis Earle converted on the subsequent penalty kick to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.
The Lobos tied the score five minutes later when James Rogers found Chris Wehan with a pass just inside the box that Wehan slotted passed Highlanders goalkeeper Ashkan Khosravi.
It remained a 1-1 match until the 68th minute when Niko Hansen streaked down the right sideline and broke free from the UCR defense. His cross found Josh Goss on the left side of the box, but Khosravi came up with the save. The ball found its way back to Goss, however, and his second strike found the back of the net.
The Highlanders remain in New Mexico where they will take on American University on Sunday. The Eagles upset #1 UCLA in the first match of the tournament, 2-1.
