San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team battled back from a one-goal deficit following a controversial penalty kick, knotting the score in the 71st minute to emerge with a 2-2 tie against San Diego State.
Tyler Cunningham, fresh off of her Big West Offensive Player of the Week award, put the Highlanders (2-0-1) on top with 8:49 gone in the match, scoring unassisted from 15 yards out.
The Aztecs (1-1-1) picked up the equalizer in the 35th minute as Hannah Keane found Kelsey Booth for her first score of the season.
That was the score as the teams entered the locker room at halftime, but with just over 17 minutes gone in the second, San Diego State had the ball in the Highlanders' side of the pitch. and Angela Mitchell drove into UC Riverside's box. Amber Marani's slide tackle dislodged the ball, and Mitchell's momentum carried her into Marani, sending her to the ground.
No call was made initially, but after the center official conferred with the linesman, the Aztecs were awarded a penalty kick. Mariah Kelmer converted to put the Aztecs up by a score of 2-1.
The Highlanders continued to press though, and in the 71st minute, Amanda Apelian found Celina Valencia for the tying score.
Neither team found the back of the net in the extra stanzas.
UC Riverside remains on the road next week traveling to USC for a Friday, September 5 meeting with the Trojans. Kick off is slated for 3 pm PT.
