O'Brien Scores Twice, But Women's Soccer Falls In Double OT, 3-2 , At Santa Barbara
10/23/2015 8:18:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Santa Barbara—UC Riverside freshman Darielle O'Brien scored the first two goals of her career to help the Highlanders take a 2-1 second half lead, but the Gauchos scored to tie it in regulation, and netted the golden goal in the second overtime to pick up a 3-2 victory over Women's Soccer (watch both UCR goals).
UC Santa Barbara moves into a three-way tie for first with the win, while the Highlanders slip to fifth, one point behind CSUN and three points behind the first place trio.
Shots were few and far between in the first half, but the Gauchos' Mallory Hromatko broke through the UC Riverside defense with just 8:30 gone off the clock. Highlanders' goalkeeper Elizabeth Silas blocked an Amanda Ball shot, but Hromatko was there to pick up the rebound to put UCSB up, 1-0.
That score held up into intermission, but O'Brien got UCR on the board in the 56th minute, beating Guachos' keeper Beth Ritter to the upper right corner.
Less than three minutes later, O'Brien dented the back of the net again on a nearly identical play.
UC Santa Barbara recorded the equalizer on Jessica Parque's shot from the left side to the top of the box sending the match into overtime.
Neither team was able to score in the first overtime period, but with 6:34 remaining in the second, Chace Schornstein trapped a pass from Ball and kicked into the lower left hand corner for the game-winner.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend taking on Cal Poly Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT.
