Shots were few and far between in the first half, but the Gauchos' Mallory Hromatko broke through the UC Riverside defense with just 8:30 gone off the clock. Highlanders' goalkeeper Elizabeth Silas blocked an Amanda Ball shot, but Hromatko was there to pick up the rebound to put UCSB up, 1-0.
That score held up into intermission, but O'Brien got UCR on the board in the 56th minute, beating Guachos' keeper Beth Ritter to the upper right corner.
Less than three minutes later, O'Brien dented the back of the net again on a nearly identical play.
UC Santa Barbara recorded the equalizer on Jessica Parque's shot from the left side to the top of the box sending the match into overtime.
Neither team was able to score in the first overtime period, but with 6:34 remaining in the second, Chace Schornstein trapped a pass from Ball and kicked into the lower left hand corner for the game-winner.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend taking on Cal Poly Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT.
