Highlanders Surrender Pair of Second Half Goals to Hawaii
10/18/2019 10:36:00 PM | Women's Soccer
RIVERSIDE—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team had a great showing in its Friday night matchup with visiting Hawaii, controlling the ball and holding it in its attacking third for much of the contest, but the Highlanders just couldn't break through as the Rainbow Wahine claimed the match 2-0.
Two second half goals for UH would help the team improve to a 3-0-0 conference record while UCR fell to 0-4-0.
After 45 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Rainbow Wahine broke through in the 55th as Elena Palacios played a long ball into the box that Kelci Sumida would redirect on a header into the net. The team would make it 2-0 in the 88th with a goal from Eliza Ammandolia.
The Highlanders saw many opportunities in the contest, holding a fair percentage of possession and creating some great looks offensively. Unfortunately, they have yet to find that key player that can come in and finish off the plays with great execution.
Junior Neyda Martinez nearly stepped into that roll coming on the field and finding the ball consistently thanks to determined and scrappy play. She would finish with a team high four shots, two of which were on goal.
On the defensive end, senior keeper Annie Bailey collected a match high four saves.
UH would end the match with 10 total shots landing six on frame compared to eight by UCR, with three on frame.
UC Riverside will now close out its home schedule this Sunday, with a Senior Day Blue Out celebration as the Highlanders take on a struggling UC Davis team. Kick-off is set for 2 PM.
