BERKELEY—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team did not shy away from a ranked opponent Friday night as the Highlanders took a trip up north to face undefeated No. 21 Cal. UCR fought hard and put pressure on a Golden Bear team that has allowed just one goal through eight matches, but would eventually fall 2-0.

Despite two goals finding the net, it was a warm welcoming for senior keeper Annie Bailey, who rejoined the starting lineup and notched a career-high nine saves. Her previous best came exactly 364 days prior to tonight's match, when she collected seven against a tough Denver team at home.

The Golden Bears would get on the board in the first on half on a Highlander miscue that resulted in an own-goal by UCR. Cal had several other opportunities in the first half but the Highlander defense kept the match close throughout as the two teams went to the locker rooms.

Just 45 seconds into the second period, Cal added to is lead with a header by Emily Smith off a close free kick from Luca Deza. This would sum up the Golden Bear scoring as they went on to take it 2-0.

UCR put offensive pressure on in the 2nd half, notching all three of shots and landing two on frame. Sophomore Shanya Dhindsa and freshman Jessica Tamayo collected the two, but unfortunately could not get past the Cal keeper.

The road trip continues this Sunday for UC Riverside as the team heads to Fresno State.
