Women's Soccer Earns First Tie of the Season
9/26/2019 11:23:00 PM | Women's Soccer
RIVERSIDE—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (2-6-1) earned its first tie of the season Thursday night ending an 110 minute match 1-1 with visiting Denver (3-4-2). Each team had its opportunity to take the match, but a late goal by the Pioneers and a huge penalty kick save from senior keeper Annie Bailey would see the match end in a draw.
Both teams would go scoreless in the first half despite Denver putting up 10 total shots compared to UCR's one. Three would land on frame to give Bailey three saves in the first period.
Out of the locker rooms came a determined UCR team that was looking for its second straight win at home. The Highlanders would go on the attack putting up six shots, and would finally break though in the 61st minute. Senior Amanda Roy played a ball in to sophomore Shanya Dhindsa who fired off a hard shot that would be blocked by a Pioneer defender. Luckily, junior Alexis Vera saw the opportunity develop as she was there to punch in a goal on the rebound.
The two teams battled for the remainder of the period, but as the final whistle approached, Denver earned a counter that saw the Highlanders out of position. With just eight seconds remaining, Camryn MacMillan woudl find the back of the net to force overtime.
In the 109th minute, the Pioneers were on the move again and forced Bailey to come out and make a play within the box. Bailey would get tangled with the attacker, bringing her down and resulting in a penalty kick.
With a chance to win it all Hannah Adler tried to roll one by Bailey, but the veteran keeper was there to make her fourth save of the match and preserve the tie.
UC Riverside will now hit the road visiting Santa Clara this weekend for the final non-conference contest of the season, this Sunday.
