Vera's Late PK Gives Highlanders First Win
9/8/2019 8:48:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FULLERTON, Calif.—The first win of the year for the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (1-4-0) came in a neutral site matchup, Sunday afternoon, with the Highlanders edging out Houston (2-3-0) 1-0 at Titan Stadium. The two teams battled defensively for the length of the match until a penalty kick goal by junior Alexis Vera in the 88th minute sealed it for the Highlanders.
UCR has now bested UH in each of the last two seasons, with both wins coming in California with a 1-0 score.
The Highlanders embraced a true bend, don't break mentality as the Cougars came out firing off nine first half shots, but only landed two on frame. Freshman Caela Kaio earned her second start in goal collecting those two first half saves to go along with another pair in the second and a clean slate.
The aggressiveness was flipped when both teams exited the locker rooms at the half as after taking just two shots in the first period, UCR got on the attack in the second taking five shots and landing three on goal.
In the 88th minute the Cougars would bring down a Highlander inside the box, resulting in a UCR penalty kick. Vera would step to the spot and fire one high into the net passed the outstretched UH keeper to give her team a 1-0 lead.
The defense would do the rest as UC Riverside pulled out its first win of the season.
The team will look to keep it going next Friday at home when it welcomes Idaho to UCR Soccer Stadium.
