RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A first-half goal from freshman Aaliyah Tu'ua and second-half score by sophomore Alexandra Hargrave were backed by stout goalkeeping by sophomore Caela Kaio as the Highlanders beat UC Davis, 2-1, for their first Big West Conference win of the season Sunday at UCR Soccer Stadium.
Tu'ua connected for her first career goal for UC Riverside in minute 29, beating UC Davis netminder Nicki Rucki low and right in her only shot on goal, an unassisted score.
The Highlanders came out of halftime ready to play and widened the lead to 2-0 when Hargrave took a pass from Leigh Polson and went the other way, getting it past Rucki to the left for Hargrave's second of the season and Polson's second assist.
Kaio was credited with six saves as UCR stopped 14 of 15 shots on goal by UC Davis, while the Highlanders put eight shots on goal. The Aggies got their goal from Leslie Fregoso in the 79th minute, but the Highlanders held on to earn their fourth win of the season.
Sunday's victory was UCR's first conference win in eight attempts, two of which ended as draws, including a 1-1 result last time out against Hawai'i and a double-overtime scoreless draw Sept. 30 vs. Long Beach. The Highlanders' last Big West win was also against the Aggies, coming, considering the entire 2020 season was canceled due to COVID, on Oct. 20, 2019.
Next up, the Highlanders travel to CSUN to face the Matadors at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14.
