Baseball Doubles Up CSUN Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Highlanders scored 13 total runs and got 14 innings of solid starting pitching as they swept their Saturday doubleheader and clinched their first road series at CSUN since 2011, winning their fourth straight overall with 5-1 and 8-4 victories at Matador Field.

After taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth of the first game Saturday on runs from Travis Bohall and Ely Stuart, UC Riverside (10-16, 8-11 Big West) never looked back. Freshman catcher Mason Grace called a good game and kept the ball in front of him during his game one start, with Ethan Payne resuming the catching duties for second half of the twin bill.

Game one pitcher Tucker Juline (2-1) made longest start of career, going eight innings and giving up one run in eight hits. Jake Lachemann closed the ninth with two strikeouts in game one, which also featured a two-run home run from Nathan Webb (1-for-4 game one, 3-for-5 game two) in the fifth.

The Highlanders never trailed in the second game of the day as both teams hoped to preserve limited bullpen depth. Starter Tyler Frazier (1-1) looked comfortable for UC Riverside through six innings, when Chad Wilson became the Matadors' third pitcher and allowed two inherited runners to score.

The bottom of the sixth saw the Matadors threaten Frazier with runners at first and second with no outs. But shortstop Anthony Mata (3-for-4, RBI), one of three Highlanders to notch three hits in game two snared a liner to end the inning still up by three runs. Dylan Orick (3-for-5) added another insurance run in the ninth with his third RBI on a double that scored Shanks for an 8-2 score.

Lyons issued three walks to load the bases before Mata caught a popout to seal the Highlanders' first series at CSUN in 10 years and the fourth victory in a row.

The fourth and final game of this series begins 1 p.m. on Sunday at Matador Field.
