Johnson leads UC Riverside on final day in Arizona
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - UC Riverside (2-6, 0-0 Big West) wrapped up the Lumberjack Classic on Friday afternoon at the Rolle Activity Center with a 3-0 defeat (25-13, 25-20, 25-18) to Omaha (4-3, 0-0 Summit League).
Sariah Johnson led UC Riverside with 10 kills on 23 swings.
UCR caught a break with an Omaha service error that disrupted an otherwise upstart offense. The Highlanders saw few favors from then on in set one, except for a 5-2 run that brought the frame back to a single-digit deficit. Johnson, who finished set one with five kills on eight swings, paced the squad in the opening frame.
UC Riverside opened set two with a 4-2 advantage on kills by Johnson, Juliette D'Eliseo, and Andrea Brewer. The Highlanders kept it close from then on as Omaha fought back with sporadic scoring runs, but a kill from Brewer brought UCR within two points at 15-17. Two kills from D'Eliseo and back-to-back aces from Elena Kasavica returned the deficit to two at 19-21, forcing Omaha to call for time. UCR pulled the deficit to one with an Omaha attacking error out of the break before the Mavericks closed out the set.
An evenly matched start to set three saw UCR keep its nose ahead, thanks to a 4-0 run with three Omaha errors and a Brewer kill. The Mavericks raced ahead at 15-11 with Johnson's ninth kill briefly interrupting the run. Two more errors from Omaha pushed UCR within a point at 16-17, but the Mavericks put the finishing touches across the line.
UC Riverside returns to action next weekend at the Utah Tech Tournament with a 5:00 pm first serve against Chicago State on Thursday, September 17. Fans can follow the action with live stats at GoHighlanders.com.
