UCR falls 1-0 to Northern Colorado

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (2-5-0, 0-0-0 Big West) fell 1-0 to Northern Colorado (3-3-2, 0-0-0) on Thursday night at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
The Highlanders applied pressure early, earning four corner kicks in the opening 11 minutes. Lauren Nguyen recorded UCR's first shot of the night in the 10th minute before Northern Colorado answered with a pair of attempts that were stopped by KaMia Elliott.
Northern Colorado broke through in the 20th minute when Lexi Tuite found the back of the net off an assist from Anneliese Wong to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
UCR looked for an equalizer midway through the opening half. Albertine Faye put a shot on frame in the 30th minute, but Northern Colorado goalkeeper Thordis Melsted made the save. The Highlanders followed with another corner less than a minute later.
Elliott kept the deficit at one before halftime, making her third save of the opening period in the 44th minute. She finished the first half with three saves before Trinity Hale took over in goal to begin the second half.
The Highlanders continued to push forward after the break, earning a corner in the 50th minute. Northern Colorado generated pressure of its own with three second-half corner kicks over the next 17 minutes, but the UCR defense kept the visitors from adding to their lead.
Hale made her lone save of the night in the 76th minute before UCR mounted a late push for the equalizer. Sanaa Guyness sent an attempt high in the 80th minute, and Macie Baird followed less than a minute later with a shot on frame that was saved by Melsted. UCR earned its seventh corner of the match in the 83rd minute but was unable to find the tying goal.
The Highlanders finished the night with seven corner kicks to Northern Colorado's five, while Elliott and Hale combined for four saves.
