Doll’s career day at the net guides UCR in the Bay Area
SAN JOSE, Calif. - UC Riverside (1-2, 0-0 Big West) returned to action at the SJSU Invite on Friday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-22) win over New Orleans (1-2, 0-0 Southland) at Spartan Gym.
Friday's result marked a fourth straight year with a non-conference sweep for the Highlanders, who hit .255 on the day.
Casi Doll led the squad with 13 points on 12 kills and an ace, while Elena Kasavica and Maya Barron combined for 35 of UCR's 39 assists.
Two kills from Doll got Friday's match off the ground for UC Riverside, who jumped out to a 7-2 advantage in set one. New Orleans caught up and tied the frame at 18, but Doll's seven points in the frame, all from kills, pushed UCR over the line for the wire-to-wire set win.
Set two mimic'd the tempo of set one as both sides went back and forth early. UCR pushed the lead out of reach with a 7-2 scoring run that started with another back-to-back kills from Doll. Nikki Hughes, Zeynep Belgutay, and Sariah Johnson also picked up points at the net during the spurt.
UCR dominated the Privateers in set two with a .324 hitting clip to .156.
Set three mirrored set one with a fast Highlander start and New Orleans playing catch up. UCR opened the frame on a 5-1 opening run, thanks to one ace apiece from Doll and Elena Kasavica. UC Riverside struggled to close things out following a 5-0 run to set up match point, but Johnson's seventh kill of the match put the bow on the sweep.
UCR will close out its trip to the Bay Area on Saturday, September 5, with a 2:00 pm match against Portland. Fans can follow along with live stats on GoHighlanders.com.
