Riverside—The Highlanders could not stop the highest scoring tandem in the Big West Conference, as the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos defeated the UC Riverside Highlanders 2-0 behind goals from Jen Borcich and Kriystal Stanza at the UCR soccer stadium on Friday.
Santa Barbara remained undefeated in Big West play, improving to 6-0-1, 13-3-2 on the season, and UCR falls to 3-3-1, 9-7-1 on the season.
Borcich got the ball deep in UCR territory on a cross from Stanza in the 19th minute. Borcich juked a Highlander defender and put the ball to the right post past a diving Katie Blank and the Gauchos opened up a 1-0 advantage.
Santa Barbara added to the lead with five minutes remaining in the first half when Sandza made contact on a cross in front of the Highlander net and somehow managed to get the ball through a crowd of UCR defenders for a two goal advantage. Sandza leads the Big West with 23 goals.
The Highlanders had many chances on the evening putting 11 shots on the Gaucho net, but UCSB goalkeeper Jamie Cosidine recorded six saves. Blank tallied eight saves in taking the loss.
The Highlanders will return to action on Sunday in a Big West Conference match-up, playing host to Cal Poly in the last home game of the season on Sunday, November 3 at 1:00 PM. Seniors Colleen Sweeney, Kristin Cocks and Katie Small will be playing their last collegiate games.
