
Highlanders Drop Second Match Of Year, 3-0, To San Jose State

Riverside—Spartan junior Mariko Yoshihara scored two goals and senior Emily New added a goal and an assist as the San Jose State Spartans earned their first victory of the season defeating UC Riverside 3-0 at the UCR Lower Fields on Monday.
The Spartans (1-1) opened the scoring in the tenth minute when Jeane Sunseri wrestled the ball away from Highlander forward Tracy Schuster and passed ahead to Spartan forward Alaina Chandler. Chandler controlled the pass and centered to a streaking New, who beat UCR goalie Katie Blank to the left post and the Spartans opened up a 1-0 lead.
SJSU added to the lead in the 80th minute as Yoshihara scored the first of her two goals on a breakaway. New delivered a pass hitting Yoshihara in perfect stride whom sped past the Scot's defense line and easily beat Blank with a shot to the right post. Yoshihara added a goal with less then a minute remaining, stealing the ball from Blank and chipping it into the net.
UCR appeared to dictate play, having out-shot the Spartans 17-10, with most of the match taking place in Spartan territory. San Jose State goalie Erin Lavey recorded five saves.
With the loss, the Highlanders fell to 0-2 on the season, having been outscored 8-1 in the two losses.
The Highlanders return to action next Friday, September 6, against the San Diego Toreros at the UCR Lower Fields at 3 pm.
