Late Score Gives #23 Denver, 1-0, Win Over Women's Soccer

Denver, CO—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team battled #23 Denver for 90 minutes, Sunday, but Jenni Harris broke through the Highlanders defenses with 4:13 on the clock to give the Pioneers a 1-0 victory over visiting UCR (box score).

Both teams were credited with five shots in the first half, but the Highlanders (5-3-2) put pressure on the Denver defense with four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. Neither team was able to find the back of the net, however, and the game was scoreless at the half.

The flow of the game changed in the second as the Pioneers (7-1-0) upped the tempo outshooting UC Riverside 6-3, while amassing four corner kicks of their own in the period compared to none for the Highlanders.

The teams appeared headed for overtime, but with just over four minutes to go, Lleane Grimditch found Harris in the box, and Harris beat keeper Tawny Poggio with the only score of the game. It was the first time UC Riverside has been shut out this season.

The Highlanders return home this week for their final non-conference game of the season as they take on San Diego State.
